Animal lovers and fair-minded individuals across Conwy will be welcoming the news today that giving pets and small animals as prizes in fairgrounds, fairs and circuses is now banned.

In a celebratory message the RSPCA have reported that Conwy County Borough Council has voted to make the practice illegal on any local authority land.

For many years providing prizes such as goldfish and in some cases birds have been part of the funfair experience but many quickly die due to mistreatment or neglect. Anyone doing so now faces a large fine or even imprisonment.

A spokesperson said, "The prizes ban makes a powerful statement for the welfare of goldfish and other animals in Conwy.

"Postitive comments about the need to treat animals with dignity and respect. Pet ownership should be a well-considered, planned and researched decision - not the outcome of a game".

The cabinet discussed animal welfare in particular the risk posed by fireworks to animals.

This issue will now be discussed further at committee with potential plans including the advertising of displays so pet owners can be prepared along with incentives or guidance encouraging local suppliers to stock ‘quieter’ fireworks.
