Llandudno Lifeboat volunteer Edith Bellamy recently celebrated her 100th birthday in the company of the lifesaving team who gathered to personally wish her a happy day.

Edith is the widow of Gordon who was lifeboat crew at Llandudno from 1955 to 1970 including 10 years as Coxswain.

Edith herself started volunteering as a fundraiser in 1965, was fundraising Treasurer for many years, Vice President of the Station Guild, and a shop volunteer as recently as January 2020.

Lifeboat crew and volunteers were delighted to mount a surprise but socially distanced visit to Edith and her family as they met to celebrate this tremendous milestone.

Edith is the holder of the RNLI’s Silver Badge, Gold Badge, and a bar to her Gold Badge, having joined Llandudno Lifeboat Ladies Guild in 1965. She has held several positions of responsibility during that time including Treasurer for over twenty years and was latterly Vice-President.

Her late husband, Gordon, joined Llandudno Lifeboat Crew in 1954 and was Coxswain in 1961. He retired in 1970.

Llandudno Deputy Launching Authority Alun Pari Huws said “I got to know Edith during my research for a book, published in 2018, about the history of Llandudno Lifeboat Station. I think she is a remarkable lady who has served the RNLI faithfully over many years.”
