A major Christmas event which delights families across the county has been cancelled due to concerns over increasing cases of COVID and the Omicron variant.

Conwy's Christmas Eve event in Lancaster Square has been a firm favourite for many years but has been called off as a precaution by the organisers Conwy Town Council.

Councillor Collette Ryan explained that the organising commitee had done everything in their power to keep the event in the diary but it was not possible due to circumstances.

She said: "It is with a very heavy heart that as Mayor of Conwy Town Council,   I have to inform you all that this year’s Christmas Eve event has had to be cancelled. This is due to the new strain of Covid that is tearing through our communities.

"Myself, fellow councillors, the staff team and the safety advisor worked long into the night yesterday discussing how the event could possibly continue but there were too many obstacles stacked against us. The health of our community must come first."
