Warning following spate of sandbank rescues in Llandudno

August 09, 2022 - 653 views

Llandudno's Coastguard has issued a warning to visitors to be on their guard about getting stranded on sand banks after a spate of recent incidents.

"At this time of year we are frequently called out to reports of people being stranded on the West Shore sand banks. Fortunately, most people are able to self recover but several times a year people require rescuing by ourselves or by the RNLI.

"The sandbanks can be very dangerous because of the large tidal range at West Shore, with 8 metre tides being quite common, and channels that fill behind you as the tide comes in.

"If you are going to go out on the sand banks make sure that you are aware of the time of low tide and come back to the beach before 2 hours after low tide. There are also a number of rescue platforms on the sandbanks so familiarise yourself with their locations in case you need to use them."

The coastguard has confirmed that most of the people who are rescued from the sandbanks are visitors to the area so if you have any friends or family staying in Llandudno please help them to stay safe by sharing their important message.
