Clwyd West Assembly Member Darren Millar has welcomed this afternoon’s announcement by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board that Llandudno’s Venue Cymru is to become the first field hospital in North Wales.

The Health Board is also exploring other sites in the region, which it hopes to announce over the next few days.

The move comes just days after Darren and Welsh Conservative MPs called on Betsi Cadwaladr to put people’s minds at rest by revealing plans for additional beds to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic, and he is therefore pleased that the are now doing this.

He said: “Today’s announcement by the Health Board is extremely welcome and will be reassuring and provide peace of mind to many people in my constituency who were becoming increasingly concerned that while provisions were being made at locations across England and also in South Wales, nothing had been announced for North Wales.

“Venue Cymru is a great site, being of good size and easily accessible for residents in both Conwy and Denbighshire.

“There is no doubt it will be a challenge to get these sites up and running in the limited time they have, but I have been informed that the Health Board will be pursuing this work at pace so that these extra beds will be available for when they are needed.

“I thank the Health Board and their staff for all their efforts in these taxing times and wait to hear in the coming days of the locations for other field hospitals in North Wales”.
