The splendour of new shelters for Llandudno's prom

Two new promenade shelters have been completed and opened on Llandudno’s North Shore, with funding from Welsh Government’s Brilliant Basics Scheme.

The project replaced two of the seven shelters on North Shore Promenade, opposite the St George’s Hotel and next to the paddling pool in Craig Y Don. The previous shelters were in poor condition, and without action they would have been at risk of closure.

Following a design consultation with local stakeholders, it was agreed that the new shelters should acknowledge the town’s heritage as a Victorian holiday resort, whilst simultaneously providing a modern, fit for purpose facility.

As a result, a Victorian design has been incorporated into the new structures, which offer seating and shelter along Llandudno’s iconic North Shore Promenade, with ample opportunity to enjoy the magnificent views across Llandudno Bay.

Contractors MWT Civil Engineering Ltd were appointed late 2022 to complete the demolition of the previous shelters and replace with quality new structures. Demolition was completed in December 2022 and the foundations of the previous shelters were assessed. Once this was complete, new materials were ordered and fabricated before being delivered to site early 2023.

Cllr Geoff Stewart, Conwy County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood and the Environment, said: “It’s very pleasing to see the new shelters finished. The promenade shelters are an important part of Llandudno’s heritage, which future generations will now be able to enjoy. The shelters help to promote our sense of place and the rich culture of Wales and Llandudno.”

Deputy Minister, Dawn Bowden said: “The projects supported through the Brilliant Basics fund make a real difference. Local tourism amenities have a big part to play in making a trip a memorable one. These facilities often go unnoticed, but they are an important part of a visitor’s experience and also benefit those who live in the area.”

Conwy County Borough Council is now seeking further funding to complete the replacement of the remaining shelters along North Shore Promenade.

This regeneration effort will ensure Llandudno continues to provide quality infrastructure which benefits both residents and visitors.
