Tomorrow, friends Grant Watson, Abergele and Jason Ede, Rhyl from will attempt to walk the Offa’s Dyke Trail, from South to North.
The Trail links Sedbury Cliffs near Chepstow on the banks of the Severn estuary with the coastal town of Prestatyn on the shores of the Irish sea.
It passes through no less than eight different counties and crosses the border between England and Wales over 20 times.
The pair will follow the National Trail walking 178 miles in total and with an elevation gain of nearly 30,000 feet, the equivalent of going up Mount Everest from sea level and then back down again.
Grant, 37, Engineering Manager, Hamilton Security Systems, originally from Llandudno Junction said “My Dad has walked the Offa’s Dyke twice and for the past 15 years I have been meaning to do it too. This year, like many, we won’t be going abroad, so we decided to use the week to walk from one end of Wales to the other for charity.
“We’re both really looking forward to the challenge. We were a little anxious when we booked, but that’s now turned to excitement and now we can’t wait to get started.
“My Mum has worked as a Health Care Support Worker at the Hospice for 20 years and any challenge I take on I always do it for the Hospice. I hope the money we raise can help the hospice maintain the fantastic care they offer to patients and their families at such a painful time.”
Each day they will walk for seven/eight hours covering at least 18 miles, with the last day being the final push and the longest at 26miles! It is hoped that family and friends will meet them at the end.
Every step Grant and Jason takes will raise funds for St David’s Hospice a local charity working across the counties of Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey. Supporting people who are affected by life-limiting illnesses, the Hospice provides dignified end-of-life care, free of charge in a warm and caring environment.
This year, it will cost over £5 million to run the services with just 9% of that figure coming from the Welsh Government and Local Health Board. The majority of this comes from community fundraising.
