Scammers taking payment for 'expiring' alcohol licences

March 05, 2025 - 448 views

Businesses in Conwy with a licence to supply alcohol are being alerted to a new scam.

Licensing Officers from Conwy Council are urging premises with alcohol licences to be aware of fraudsters posing as council officials, claiming their alcohol licence is running out or expiring. This is false, as alcohol licences do not expire or run out.

Businesses should not pay or provide financial details over the phone for licence fees in this way.

These fraudsters can often appear very convincing, sometimes having accurate information such as the fee amount or the names of real council staff.

Any legitimate requests for payment will be made in writing and should only be paid through official channels, such as BACS or directly to Conwy County Borough Council.

All Conwy Licensing officers are clearly identifiable as Conwy County employees and must have their photo ID clearly on display. If you are ever in doubt about someone claiming to be from the Council, contact Conwy Council via the number on the rear of the ID badge 01492 574000 or contact the Licensing service directly to verify their identity by emailing licensing@conwy.gov.uk

If you believe you’ve been targeted by this scam or have any relevant information, please report the incident to the licensing team at Conwy Council, North Wales Police on 101, or Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
