Rugby spirit brightens Colwyn Bay station

A once tired platform wall at Colwyn Bay railway station has been transformed into a bold celebration of North Wales rugby and community pride.

Transport for Wales has unveiled a new community art installation on Platform 2, shining a spotlight on Rygbi Gogledd Cymru (RGC) and the region’s passion for the sport.

The project is the latest in a series of community-led initiatives designed to enhance the station environment for passengers while showcasing local creativity.

Back in August 2025, players and coaches swapped boots for spray cans during a creative workshop at Stadiwm Eirias. The session saw members of the RGC Senior Academy working alongside local graffiti artist Andy “DIME One” to design artwork reflecting the heritage, ambition and pride of rugby in North Wales.

The initiative was led by Melanie Lawton, Transport for Wales Community Rail Strategy Lead, bringing together artists, young sportspeople and railway staff in a true team effort.

The finished mural was later installed at the station by Alan Griffiths and John Evans, whose craftsmanship helped turn the workshop vision into a striking permanent feature.

Sarah Jones, Learning and Engagement Facilitator at Transport for Wales, said: “The station artwork has been created with a real sense of pride, connecting people, sport and transport. We’re passionate about connecting communities to their railway. The latest artwork has been created with young people involved in sport – a real team effort.”

Alun Pritchard, RGC General Manager, added: “We’re incredibly pleased to see the RGC mural displayed at Colwyn Bay train station. It’s a wonderful celebration of our roots in Colwyn Bay and a proud moment for everyone involved.

“We hope many supporters will have the opportunity to see the artwork in person when visiting by train and passing through the station. The train station is a focal point for our supporters as they travel from all corners of North Wales, making this display even more special.”

RGC represents the North Wales Development Region in Wales’ premier domestic competition, Super Rygbi Cymru, and the mural now serves as a vibrant reminder of the club’s growing presence and community impact.

Transport for Wales has thanked Andy “DIME One” for his creative talent, as well as Alan Griffiths, John Evans and Colwyn Bay station staff for their support throughout the project.

The result is a colourful welcome for rail passengers – and a powerful symbol of how sport, art and community can come together to transform a public space.
