A very successful initiative from St David’s Hospice turning peoples un-wanted items into new items that they can then sell at a profit, has been detailed by Patton's Community - an organisation set up to promote the work and passion of charities.
The St David’s Hospice Reuse Shop, based at Conwy County Borough Council’s Household Recycling Centre in Mochdre, North Wales has raised over £69,000 (profit) for the hospice charity since opening in February 2018.
Many people bring items to the Council’s Household Recycling Centre in Mochdre that they no longer need or which they might consider rubbish.
Items of furniture, toys, garden ornaments, bicycles and prams have all been brought to the centre to be disposed of. Many can be sold to new owners who can find a use for them – reducing the amount going to landfill and raising funds for St David’s Hospice.
The shop is located within a former industrial building, which has been converted into a modern retail facility, following support from the Welsh Government’s Collaborative Change Programme to improve recycling and reuse opportunities.
Cllr Don Milne Cabinet Member for Conwy Environment, Roads and Facilities said, “We’re delighted that we’re managing to divert items that would previously have gone to landfill – it saves the Council the associated landfill costs, people can benefit by getting good value items and the hospice can gain funds to support their important work.”
Hospice Chief Executive, Trystan Pritchard said, “This project has been very successful for the Hospice in raising funds to provide essential end of life care for local people. It’s great that we are able to work with the council to turn unwanted items into profit for the Hospice and make a significant contribution to reducing landfill waste across the county at the same time.”
St David’s Hospice is a registered charity providing free hospice care to adults with advanced illnesses or those in need of end of life care across the communities of Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey, North Wales.
They provided care and support local people, their families and carers free of charge, at an Inpatient Unit in Llandudno, Therapy Centres in Bangor and Llandudno, as well as in the comfort of patient’s own homes via the Hospice at Home and Outreach services.
The Hospice Reuse Shop is open every day from 9am to 5pm at Mochdre Household Recycling Centre, Bron-y-Nant Road, Mochdre.
