Rotarians hear about the plight of communities in South Africa

Last week local Rotary Club members joined colleagues on the other side of the world to hear about the plight of communities in South Africa.

Through the wonders of video conferencing, 14 members of Llandudno Rotary joined with 6 members of South Point Rotary, Cape Town and a welcome guest from the USA.

The occasion was to hear from Ms. Pat Pillay-Louw, founder and leader of the charity 'RPJ Helping Hands', which provides meals, substenance and hope to thousands of destitute people in Cape Town.

The link arose partly because Llandudno Rotarians Ian and Mararet Trevette have had regular contact with the charity, via their links wth South Point Rotary, and partly because another Llandudno Rotarian, Ashok Harshey had raised £1,400 last year for the charity, by undertaking a 22 mile Pier to Pier 22 mile walk from Llandudno to Bangor

Pat explained how the charity’s simple mission 'Love All Serve All', inspires herself and 48 volunteers to supply 7,500 meals in a typical week.

The meals go the hungry and homeless of the Cape Town CBD area; other ventures comprise assisting with monthly groceries for a Children’s Safe Home in Durban.

The charity recognises the absolute dependancy of the recipients in these desperate times of unemployment and poverty.

Margaret Trevette responded with the vote of thanks to Pat for her humbling and thought provoking talk.
