A 35-year-old woman who died in a van fire in Prestatyn was pregnant, police have confirmed, as her family paid tribute to a much-loved mother, daughter, sister and friend.
Samantha Natalie Phythian, known as Sammi by her family, was from Rhyl and died following a fire in a van on Gas Works Lane, Prestatyn, on the evening of Sunday, 4 October.
A postmortem examination revealed that she was pregnant at the time of her death.
Her family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
Thomas Bell, 38, from Rhyl, was charged with murder on Wednesday evening. He appeared before Mold Crown Court this morning and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance.
In a tribute, Sammi’s family described her death as devastating and said she would be remembered for the special place she held in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
They said: “A much loved Mum, daughter, sister, Auntie and friend.
“Samantha, who everyone knows as Sammi, will be remembered for the special place she held in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved her.
“Her tragic and untimely death has left her family and friends devastated, struggling to come to terms with the loss of someone who meant so much to so many.
“No family should ever have to endure the pain of losing a loved one in such circumstances.”
They added that although her life had been cut short, the memories she created, the love she gave and the lives she touched would never be forgotten.
The family also appealed for people to be mindful of the impact of rumours circulating on social media and asked for their privacy to be respected as they grieve.
Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Zoie Dunkerley, said: “My thoughts are with Sammi’s family and friends.”
She also urged people to be careful about posting comments that could add to the family’s distress or interfere with the ongoing legal proceedings.
Police are continuing to investigate and are asking anyone with information that could assist the inquiry to contact them through the live webchat or by calling 101, quoting reference 26000816112.
