An enthralled crowd relished a captivating demonstration of both traditional and radical hair designs, as Grŵp Llandrillo Menai's Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy students battled it out for medals at the Grŵp's annual grand final.

Over 100 full and part-time students from across Coleg Llandrillo, Coleg Menai and Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor campuses were involved in the many in-house competitions, including stylists, beauticians and models.

Qualifiers had to battle it out in previous individual college heats for places in the final. Winners from the final will now be selected to enter both national and WorldSkills' competitions.

Coleg Llandrillo was represented by qualifiers from the Rhos-on-Sea and Rhyl heats. Students from Rhos-on-Sea - who were the defending champions - won 5 gold medals and Rhyl students scooped 4 gold medals to capture second place, making Coleg Llandrillo's Rhos-on-Sea campus the overall winner - by just one point - and the holder of the shield for another year.

Hairdressing competitions ranged from gents cut and blow dry, through hair-up categories ('A Night at the Prom' and 'Bridal/Prom'), to bridal and avant garde. Beauty Therapy students tackled tasks including nail art, massage, make-up and manicures.

Models' costumes included wedding dresses, climate change-themed designs and ice queen and forest creatures-inspired creations, complimented by associated hairstyles and make-up. The competitions provided the opportunity for students to demonstrate their creative as well as technical skills.

The judges included representatives from City Glam Hair Studio in St Asaph, former salon owner Margaret Bickerstaff, Suzanne Smith from The Salon in Colwyn Bay, along with local hairdressers Danny Hughes and Lee Cox.

One member of staff from Rhyl College's Hairdressing department said: "This cross-college competition was an opportunity for all Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy students to show off their individual skills and talents.

"The standard of the competitions was exceptionally high and reflects the exceptional skills that our students are being taught across Grŵp Llandrillo Menai's colleges".
