Clwyd West and Colwyn Bay MS Darren Millar has welcomed today’s announcement by the Welsh Education Minister that all schools in Wales will reopen on June 29th.

Kirsty Williams MS said that from this date schools will be open to pupils from all year groups for limited periods during the week, with only a third of pupils in school at any one time.

Darren said: “I very much welcome today’s announcement by the Education Minister which ends the weeks of uncertainty and will enable schools and their staff to embark on a three week programme of preparation.

“Whilst schools and teachers have been doing a great job of providing education virtually since schools were closed back in March, nothing compares to the face to face teaching children receive in the school setting.

“Some might argue that the schools should not have been reopened until September, but this virus is going to be around for some time yet, so it is vital that we prepare children, and teaching staff, for the new normal.

“Whilst children will have to continue working remotely from their homes for part of the week, at least by returning to school they will be not be so isolated and will be reunited with their friends, albeit at a safe distance,  which is essential for their mental wellbeing.

“The schools have now got a job on their hands to prepare for all the necessary changes, but I am confident that they can rise to the challenge.

"I would like to thank them all for adapting so successfully in recent weeks and I wish them, and all pupils, the very best going forward.”
