Police step up road checks amid summer 'social season'

North Wales Police is reminding motorists there is no excuse for getting behind the wheel under the influence of drink or drugs as officers step up enforcement across the region during the busy summer months.

With the recent hot weather, major sporting events including the World Cup, and an increase in barbecues, outdoor gatherings and other social events, Roads Crime Unit officers are carrying out enhanced patrols day and night to catch drivers who choose to drive while impaired.

Police say the summer months often see more people spending time with family and friends, but are urging motorists to plan ahead and avoid making decisions that could have devastating consequences.

The warning follows a number of recent arrests for drink and drug driving offences across North Wales. Officers say drivers have been found under the influence at various times of the day and night, highlighting the ongoing need for enforcement and education.

Although the vast majority of motorists drive responsibly, North Wales Police says it remains committed to targeting the small minority who continue to put themselves and others at risk.

Inspector Leigh Evans, of the Roads Crime Unit, said: “Drink and drug driving remains one of the Fatal Five offences and continues to be a significant factor in serious and fatal collisions on our roads.

“While many people enjoy socialising during the warmer weather and major sporting events, we want to make it clear that if you choose to drive whilst under the influence of drink or drugs, you are putting lives at risk, and you can expect to be caught.”

He also warned drivers not to overlook the dangers of the “morning after” effect.

“You may feel fine the next day, but alcohol and drugs can remain in your system far longer than many people realise. If you’ve been drinking heavily the night before, there is a real possibility you could still be over the limit when you get behind the wheel the following morning.”

Inspector Evans said Roads Crime Unit officers are carrying out intelligence-led patrols and roadside checks around the clock and will continue to take robust action against anyone caught driving while impaired.

Police are also highlighting the consequences of a conviction, which can include a driving ban, unlimited fines, imprisonment and a criminal record.

Figures released by the force show that 883 people were arrested for drink driving across North Wales in 2025, while 1,317 were arrested for drug driving. Those figures were both higher than the previous year, when officers made 838 drink-driving arrests and 1,146 drug-driving arrests.

North Wales Police is encouraging members of the public to report anyone they suspect of driving under the influence by contacting the force via its website, by calling 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers. In an emergency, people should always dial 999.

The force is urging motorists to plan ahead this summer by arranging a designated driver, using public transport or booking a taxi, warning that one poor decision behind the wheel can have lifelong consequences.
