Police seize offending vehicles in Denbighshire road checks

Police have seized vehicles and reported drivers for motoring offences during proactive road checks across the Denbighshire coastal area.

Officers from North Wales Police’s Denbighshire Coastal and Abergele neighbourhood policing team, PC Hughes and PC Jones, stopped several vehicles as part of efforts to improve road safety.

According to the team, three vehicles were stopped over insurance offences, with drivers reported and vehicles seized. A further five vehicles were stopped in connection with expired or failed MOT tests, driving without a licence and insurance offences.

Police say the checks are intended to identify drivers who are not meeting their legal responsibilities and could be putting other road users at risk.

Driving without insurance is illegal, even if the vehicle itself is insured but the policy does not cover the person driving it. Motorists caught without appropriate insurance can face a fixed penalty of £300 and six penalty points. Cases taken to court can result in an unlimited fine and disqualification, while police also have powers to seize vehicles.

An MOT certificate is another important legal requirement for most cars over three years old. The test checks whether a vehicle meets minimum roadworthiness and environmental standards, although a valid MOT does not guarantee that a vehicle remains safe between tests.

Drivers must not normally use a vehicle on the road without a valid MOT when one is required. There are limited exceptions, including travelling to a pre-arranged MOT appointment, subject to the vehicle being safe to drive. Vehicles must also be properly insured and driven by someone with the appropriate licence.

Police advise motorists to check their insurance documents carefully, particularly if they are driving somebody else’s vehicle or using their car for work. Insurance policies do not necessarily cover every driver or every type of use.

North Wales Police say they will continue carrying out proactive checks across the area to tackle motoring offences and encourage safer driving.

The force is reminding motorists that insurance, a valid driving licence and a roadworthy vehicle are essential responsibilities, helping protect drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other road users.
