Old Colwyn prom could be closed in sea defence row

A row has broken out over who is ultimately responsible for crumbling sea defences on the Old Colwyn Promenade following a report out from Conwy County Borough Council.

The state of the stretch is causing increasing concern and could see this part of the promenade closed on a permanent basis.

It was revealed that the condition of the sea wall defences have deteriorated so much over time that the cost of remedial work to fully repair the defences over the entire stretch from Porth Eirias to Cliff Gardens could cost as much as £36m.

On-going repairs and maintenance have been a bone of contention between many public bodies including Conwy County Borough Council and Welsh Government. Conwy Council have now said that the cannot afford to pay the £40,000 year costs of repairs to maintain them to the current standard.

Many local people and councillors have criticised the impasse saying the position was becoming increasingly dire and if the defences did fail, this would cause massive disruption to the area.

Both the railway embankment and A55 Expressway run parallel with the Promenade.
