New information DVD for local radiotherapy patients

Patients attending the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre for radiotherapy will benefit from a new, locally produced information DVD which offers a step by step guide to the radiotherapy process – from referral to end of treatment.

The new resource has been welcomed by patients. Alongside the Radiotherapy Unit monthly open evenings, the DVD is designed to improve the experience of people who may be coming to the Unit for the first time.

The making of the DVD was inspired and made possible by local man Robert Andrews-Wood, of Cardrews Media who completed his degree in Film & Media Sciences at TriBeCa Flashpoint Media Arts College in Chicago.

Robert generously offered his filming and editing services free of charge and worked closely with staff at the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre to produce the DVD.

The Tenovus Cancer Care charity is funding the production of the DVDs and the accompanying promotional material so that, at the earliest opportunity, every patient who requires a course of radiotherapy receives a DVD. This means that patients will be able to view and discuss the treatment details with their family and friends before their first visit.

Taking advantage of the Centre’s monthly open evenings, Robert gave patients the opportunity to watch and voice their opinions on the DVD. Patient feedback was extremely positive.

Carmel Barnett, Radiotherapy Services Manager, said, “We are extremely fortunate to be able to provide this service for our patients and are very grateful to Robert and Tenovus Cancer Care for making this possible.”

Robert added, “When I was approached to do the filming, I soon realised what a useful addition to the existing information this would be, from my conversations with Carmel, I came to understand, that for patients attending the Radiotherapy Department, knowing what to expect from radiotherapy treatment helps to eliminate some of the anxiety surrounding the unknown so that patients are more relaxed during the procedure.”
