Patients across North Wales are benefitting from improved Colposcopy services, thanks to the Health Board adopting a new digital upgrade for patient records.
The new system has enhanced the way patient information is recorded and accessed.
The new electronic Colposcopy Patient Management System encompasses an electronic patient record which is part of the Welsh Clinical Portal system. This has replaced the older Canisc system. It records detailed clinical information and saves images automatically to patients’ electronic records, allowing clinicians to access everything they need in one place.
This improvement means that multi-disciplinary teams can review all relevant clinical information and images together, supporting more informed and timely decision-making. The system also gives clinicians and decision-makers access to more comprehensive data to support planning and improve patient care.
The Health Board’s Colposcopy team has been using the new system for several months and has already seen significant benefits.
Esther Clements, Lead Nurse Colposcopist at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, said “Auditing is now much quicker and more efficient. Previously, I had to open several different systems, but now everything is accessible through the Welsh Clinical Portal. Our trainees are also finding it really valuable, as the new form promotes a standardised approach — encouraging systematic assessment and accurate recording of findings aligned to national standards.
“It’s been a really positive experience to be part of developing this new system alongside Colposcopy colleagues across Wales and the team at Digital Health and Care Wales. The Health Board were instrumental in the robust user acceptance testing across the Health Board and were the first Health Board to adopt gold standard simultaneous testing all clinics.
“I’d like to thank our entire Colpocopy Team and IT teams here at BCUHB for their support — they’ve played a key role in helping us implement and get the most out of the new system. This collaboration has strengthened relationships between clinical and non-clinical teams and improved how we work together.”
The new system has now been introduced to all 18 Colposcopy clinics across Wales, supporting more consistent and efficient care for patients.
