A road rage incident in Conwy has been described as “extremely aggressive and shocking” after a driver was caught on his own dashcam punching another motorist unconscious.

The attack happened in Llanrwst last June when the victim suddenly stopped his car, fearing something was wrong after hearing a loud beep. He had been pulling over to collect eggs from a nearby shop.

Footage shown at Caernarfon Crown Court captured 37-year-old John Lee, of Cae Tyddyn, Llanrwst, stopping behind the vehicle before getting out and shouting, “what are you doing?” He then approached the driver’s door and struck the victim, knocking him unconscious.

The assault took place in front of the victim’s wife, children, and elderly parents. The court heard Lee was also verbally aggressive towards the victim’s wife when she got out of the car.

The force of the punch left the victim with a bruised eye socket and grazed eyelid. In a statement, he said the incident had left him suffering from increased forgetfulness and had a lasting emotional impact on his family.

Lee had already admitted causing actual bodily harm. His defence described the incident as a “single, isolated” moment of madness, adding that he had struggled with his mental health and had since worked to support others by setting up a mental health football team.

Sentencing on April 21, Judge Nicola Jones поted the seriousness of the attack, particularly as it happened in front of the victim’s family, and criticised Lee’s aggressive behaviour towards the victim’s wife.

Lee was given an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. He must also complete 10 rehabilitation days and pay £500 in compensation, along with a statutory surcharge.
