Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal marks 40 years this year – with people encouraged to donate and wear their daffodil pins through February and March, in a bid to ensure more people get the best possible end of life.
The UK’s leading end of life charity has come a long way since 1986 where our volunteers took to the streets handing out fresh daffodils, and is currently celebrating 40 years of communities coming together to raise vital funds for end of life care.
The charity’s flagship fundraiser helps raise much needed funds so that Marie Curie Nurses and healthcare professionals can provide expert support and hospice care, whether in the comfort of home, at one of its hospices or via its information and support services.
In Wales, the campaign comes ahead of and during St David’s Day, meaning it’s the ideal time to donate to get the national flower to mark both events.
Marie Curie is also asking everyone in Wales to celebrate the milestone by getting creative with a “40 for 40” campaign – challenging you to fundraise by doing anything 40 themed.
This could be:
Host a coffee morning and invite 40 people
Take part in 40 cold-water dips
Collect 40 items and hold a charity raffle
Organise a quiz with 40 questions
Bake 40 cakes to sell to your friends
Set a personal challenge to raise £40
Some dedicated volunteers in Wales have already committed to getting creative, and ideas include yarnbombing 40 post boxes, walking 40 miles in March, knitting 40 daffodil pins, or hosting a St David’s Day party with 40 friends!
Charlotte Brown, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser for North Wales, said: “Why not be part of something amazing in our 40th year and volunteer to invent your own fundraising event – with the emphasis on the fun! Together we can make the Great Daffodil Appeal really special this year.
“By taking up our challenge you can help Marie Curie continue to provide expert end of life care and support for people with any illness they are likely to die from.”
Great Daffodil Appeal collections are also being held, if you’re able to give two hours of your time, at Morrisons supermarkets between February 23 and March 8, as well as at other key locations.
