Local leaders ask Government to re-consider new COVID plans

Local leaders in the Conwy area have been calling on Welsh Government to re-consider their plans to roll out strict new Covid measures across Wales ahead of Christmas.

It is being argued that a nationwide response is unfair on residents and businesses in areas which have low numbers of coronavirus cases.

Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has called on the Welsh Government to adopt a targeted and proportionate approach to tackling the spread of Covid.

Mr. Millar is also calling for clarity over pre-Christmas restrictions, with people in North Wales currently unsure about where they are allowed to travel to and what recreational activities they are permitted to do.

He said: “It is grossly unfair to impose the same level of restrictions in Conwy and Denbighshire as Covid-19 hotspots in South Wales. A Wales-wide blanket approach which will wreak havoc on businesses and the jobs that depend on them, especially in the hospitality and entertainment industries.

“People in North Wales also need urgent clarity on pre-Christmas restrictions on things like travel and recreational activities. The current situation is confusing and will cause many to inadvertently break the rules.”

Sam Rowlands, Leader of Conwy County Borough Council has also written to the First Minister Mark Drakeford to express his disappointment at the announcement of an all Wales set of further restrictions to the hospitality sector.
