A volunteer lifeboat crew in North Wales responded swiftly to a multi-agency emergency in Llandudno Bay over the weekend, highlighting both the vital role of rescue services and the importance of staying safe around the coast as summer approaches.

At around 6pm on Sunday, 4 May, the inshore lifeboat from RNLI Llandudno launched to assist colleagues from North Wales Police and HM Coastguard following reports of a person in difficulty in the water.

With a crew of four volunteers on board, the lifeboat made best speed to the scene, where they worked closely with emergency services already in attendance. The incident was brought under control, and one casualty was safely recovered from the water before being brought ashore and handed into the care of ambulance personnel.

After ensuring the individual received medical attention, the crew returned to station, where the lifeboat was prepared and made ready for service again—demonstrating the professionalism and readiness of local volunteers who can be called into action at any time.

While the outcome reflects the effectiveness of a coordinated emergency response, it also serves as a timely reminder of the risks posed by the sea—particularly as warmer weather draws more people to North Wales’ coastline.

Each year, RNLI crews across Wales respond to incidents involving people caught out by cold water shock, strong currents, or unexpected changes in conditions. Even on mild days, sea temperatures remain dangerously low, and entering the water unexpectedly can quickly become life-threatening.

Simple precautions can make a significant difference. Checking tide times and weather conditions, staying within your depth, and avoiding swimming alone are all key safety steps. For those walking along cliffs or coastal paths, keeping a safe distance from edges and being aware of changing ground conditions is equally important.

The RNLI also encourages anyone heading to the coast to carry a means of calling for help, such as a mobile phone, and to dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard if they see someone in trouble.

As a charity, the RNLI relies heavily on public support to continue its lifesaving work. People can help by supporting fundraising efforts, volunteering, or simply spreading awareness about water safety in their communities.

This latest incident in Llandudno Bay underscores both the dedication of emergency responders across North Wales and the shared responsibility to stay safe and look out for one another along the coast.
