The Llandudno Inshore Lifeboat rushed to assist a cabin cruiser that ran aground at Rhos-on-Sea yesterday due to a moderate easterly wind.
Locals and holidaymakers helped move the boat before the lifeboat crew arrived.
Despite a moderate easterly wind creating a choppy swell, the volunteer RNLI crew made their way swiftly to the scene, concerned for the welfare of anyone who might still be on board. On arrival, they found the cruiser had already been moved to the foot of the Rhos-on-Sea slipway and secured alongside the jetty.
Quick-thinking locals and holidaymakers had entered the shallows to help drag the vessel clear of the rocks before the lifeboat arrived. The lifeboat crew remained with the boat while the owner collected their car and trailer. However, because the cruiser had taken on significant water after being holed, it was too heavy to recover immediately.
With the assistance of Llandudno Coastguard, the crew managed to move the vessel further up the slipway to the high-water mark. This gave the owner a better chance to recover the boat later once the excess water had drained.
This service call was significant for crew member Ian Owen, as it was his first ILB service call since becoming ‘safe to go on service’, having completed his Crew Emergency Procedures course down in Poole.
