A man who threatened a group of youths with a knife in Colwyn Bay has been jailed as police continue their efforts to tackle knife crime across North Wales.

Kyle Jones, 23, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to 20 months in prison at Caernarfon Crown Court yesterday after admitting threatening a person with a bladed article in a public place.

The court heard the incident happened on the evening of February 17 on Abergele Road in Colwyn Bay.

Council CCTV operators monitoring the town centre alerted police after spotting two men who appeared to be in possession of a knife. Officers were asked to attend nearby Station Road where the pair were seen.

Police quickly detained the two men and witnesses described how Jones had been waving the knife around and making threats towards a group of youths in the area.

Jones later pleaded guilty to threatening a person with a bladed article in a public place and appeared before Judge Timothy Petts at Caernarfon Crown Court on Friday where he was jailed for 20 months.

The case comes as North Wales Police continues its work to clamp down on knife crime across the region, including through the national campaign Operation Sceptre.

The initiative sees officers carry out targeted patrols, weapon sweeps and engagement with schools and retailers, alongside test-purchasing exercises aimed at preventing knives being sold to under-18s. Knife surrender bins are also made available during the campaign, allowing people to dispose of weapons safely.

Police say the operation is designed to both enforce the law and prevent knife crime by working closely with communities and young people.

A spokesperson for North Wales Police said: “We will continue to relentlessly pursue those who threaten the safety of our community.”
