Two Colwyn Bay based pupils recently demonstrated their sailing skills at the RS Tera Inland National Championship in Derbyshire.

For more than six decades, the art of sailing has captured the hearts of enthusiasts at Rydal Penrhos.

The school takes immense pride in its role of cultivating skilled sailors who not only achieve remarkable accomplishments but also develop an enduring passion for the vastness of the open waters, born of their time honing their craft off the shores of Rhos-on-Sea.

Rydal Penrhos boasts a distinguished Sailing and Water-Sports Centre, recognised and accredited by the Royal Yachting Association. Looking to build upon its water-sport traditions in the future, the school eagerly anticipates moving to a cutting-edge sailing hub at Porth Eirias later this year.

Rydal Penrhos sailing is in a strong position as illustrated by the achievements of Harry Bennell and Harrison Hogan. These two talented sailors set the waters alight with their exceptional performances at the highly anticipated RS Tera Inland National Championship on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 June 2023.

The event, held at the renowned Burton Sailing Club, witnessed an impressive turnout of over 80 boats, each vying for supremacy in their respective classes. Undeterred by the competition, Year 5 pupil Harry, who has been a wonderful addition to the year group since joining Rydal Penrhos in the spring, secured a commendable position within the top 20 overall in the main sport fleet.

Meanwhile Year 6 pupil Harrison, who recently performed the role of Ivor Gavel in the Prep drama production, and sails at a club level each week, participated in the regatta fleet. Taking advantage of a great coaching opportunity, Harrison produced some super results including a first place finish in one of his races; an outstanding feat, given the quality of sailors competing. Overall, there were plenty of smiles all round from both of the school's sailing stars.

A spokeperson for the school said: "Rydal Penrhos extends its heartfelt congratulations to Harrison and Harry for their outstanding achievements at the RS Tera Inland National Championship.

"Their success is a testament to their talent, hard work, and dedication. It will also inspire our youngest Prep sailors to strive for similar success".
