Conwy County Borough Council is urging everyone to take part in a consultation on the control of dogs in public places.

The Dog Control Order, which the Council originally introduced in 2012, changed into a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) in October 2017.

The PSPO is in place until 20 October 2020 when the proposed the new draft Order would come into force.

The current Order covers Dog Exclusion Zones (e.g. beaches, playing fields), Dog Fouling, Dogs on Leads, Dogs on Leads.

The Council has the opportunity to review the existing PSPO and has already held a consultation in 2018.

They are now asking the public for their opinions on further changes to the PSPO following that initial consultation.

These include proposals for changes to dogs on leads areas, adding and removing some dog exclusion areas, and lifting some seasonal exclusions.

Cllr Charlie McCoubrey, Cabinet Member for Cabinet Member for Housing and Regulatory said, “These Dog Control Orders aim to create a balance for dog owners and those who don’t have dogs to be able to enjoy public spaces.

"Our aim is to prevent the small number of irresponsible dog owners from allowing their dogs to foul, stray, and be out of control in a public place – thereby keeping everyone, including animals, safe.”

The Public Space Protection Order, the proposed changes, maps and questionnaire are available to view at https://www.conwy.gov.uk/en/Resident/Environmental-problems/Dog-Issues/Dog-Control-Orders/Dog-Control-Public-Space-Protection-Order-Consultation-2020.aspx

The closing date for comments is 28 July 2020

The results of the consultation will be presented to the Council’s Economy and Place Overview and Scrutiny Committee and Cabinet for a final decision to be made by elected members later in the year.
