Great Orme cycle challenge in memory of friend Ed

Four friends have completed a gruelling 100-mile cycling challenge to raise funds for St. David's Hospice.

Following the hilly five and a half mile route around Llandudno’s headland, Adam White, Tom Burke, Chris and Stuart Williams cycled Marine Drive 18 times in one day for St David’s Hospice.

During the challenge, more than twenty cyclists and two runners joined them en route and many supporters cheered them along the way.

The ride was in memory of Ed Burke who was cared for at St David’s Hospice when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and sadly passed away January 2019, aged 44.

Physical trainer Adam White from Rhos on Sea said: “This was the first of many challenges to remember my friend. Ed loved pushing his limits and thrived at the thought of an uncomfortable challenge.

"He would quite often enter events with little or no preparation and still perform well which was quite annoying!

“We saw the first-class care Ed received from St David’s Hospice during his short stay there. Remembering Ed and supporting the Hospice is something we are truly passionate about.”

They started at 7am and completed 100miles by 4pm the same day and through their fundraising page raised £1,614.

St David’s Hospice is a local charity providing free end of life care through its Inpatient Units, Day Therapy Centres, Hospice at Home and Outreach services.

Due to the pandemic, it has had to cancel the majority of its events this year and has to recover a loss of £1million in fundraised income.

Talking about the cycle Adam said: “Considering my preparation was minimal, I found the lack of conditioning the challenging part. The long hill was always tough and the wind at the top of the climb gave it another dimension.

“Rather than recognising the discomfort I was experiencing, I would use that time to reflect on how the funds raised would help those at the Hospice.”

On behalf of St David’s Hospice, James Wilde Conwy Area Fundraiser congratulated them on their efforts. He said:

“ It is an amazing effort by all! The Great Orme is very steep and unforgiving in places and to have the stamina and determination to complete it time and time again is astonishing.

"Well done to all involved, it’s a fundraising challenge to be very proud of. Thank you”
