The Welsh Mountain Zoo – National Zoo of Wales, has recently received a welcome show of support from screen and comedy legend, John Cleese.

In a public appeal, the Monty Python star has called for backing, from the people of Wales and beyond, for the organisation which has been in existence for more than half a century.

Whilst the much-loved Zoo is currently closed, expenditure levels remain the same.

Nick Jackson, CEO at the Welsh Mountain Zoo explained: “Our operating costs are incredibly high and at this time of year, we must find in excess of £120,000 each month to provide for our animals and maintain upkeep of the grounds, combined with all other associated operational costs.”

He added: “We are incredibly grateful for the public support that has been given to date. The great lengths our supporters have gone to over the past year has not gone unnoticed and we want to say thank you for the help that we have received to care for our wonderful animals.

"We also thank two grant-giving charities and Welsh Government for their funding support.”

“We must also extend our sincerest thanks to John, who has shown his support for the Zoo charity throughout this pandemic. His calls for continued backing during these challenging times are also truly welcomed whilst we do all we can to ensure the future of the Zoo.”
