An amber weather warning for high winds has been upgraded to a red warning in North Wales as Storm Darragh approaches.

The storm is expected to hit the North Wales Coast and the West Coast of Wales tomorrow morning, bringing potentially damaging winds, power cuts and travel disruption.

The worst of the storm is expected between 3am and 11am. The Met Office warns of wind gusts of 90mph or more, posing a danger to life and property.

Coastal areas are at risk of large waves with beach debris potentially causing injuries. Natural Resources Wales are warning people to stay away from promenades, beaches and coastal strips until the weather calms later on Saturday.

Natural Resources Wales have also issued Amber warnings for risk of flooding in parts of Wales, including those affected by Storm Bert.

The Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies said: "Red warnings are issued when there is a potential threat to life, and therefore it is essential that people in Wales heed the warnings and take very great care if they are travelling on Saturday.

"Welsh local authorities, emergency services and Natural Resources Wales have activated their preparedness structures in readiness for Storm Darragh. I urge people to make sure they are aware of the warning levels for their local area and to follow all official advice.

"We will be monitoring the situation closely and providing any support required to the agencies in their response."

The red warning covers the area west of Bangor, including Anglesey and down the coast into Mid and South Wales. An amber warning remains across the Llandudno, Colwyn Bay, Rhyl and Prestatyn coastal areas.
