More than 257,000 households across Wales received help with their council tax bills during 2025-26, according to new figures published by the Welsh Government.
The Council Tax Reduction Scheme Statistical Report shows that around one in five households in Wales benefited from a reduction in their council tax.
Of those households, more than 218,000 paid no council tax at all under the scheme.
The Welsh Government provides £244 million a year through the local government settlement to support the Council Tax Reduction Scheme.
Finance Minister Elin Jones MS said the national scheme is designed to provide targeted support to vulnerable and low-income households.
She is encouraging anyone who may be struggling with their council tax payments to check whether they are entitled to support.
Help may be available through the Council Tax Reduction Scheme, as well as through other council tax discounts, exemptions and reductions.
People who are struggling with council tax debt are being urged to contact their local authority as early as possible.

The Welsh Government says the scheme's tailored approach means financial support is targeted towards those who need it most.
The latest figures cover the 2025-26 financial year and have been published during the Senedd's summer recess to keep members informed.
