A major incident has been declared after a large wildfire broke out on Conwy Mountain, forcing residents to evacuate their homes as firefighters battle the blaze in difficult conditions.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service has been tackling the fire near Conwy Mountain and the Sychnant Pass since the early hours of Sunday morning, with crews expected to remain at the scene for some time due to the scale and complexity of the incident.

The North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said firefighters were working in "challenging conditions" to contain the wildfire and protect nearby communities.

A spokesperson said: "Due to the size and complexity of the incident, operations are expected to continue for some time."

The fire service has urged people to stay away from the area to allow emergency services to work safely and asked the public to obey all road closures and safety instructions.

Residents living close to the fire have also been advised to keep their windows and doors closed because of the thick smoke.

People evacuated from their homes gathered at The Gladstone Inn, where many faced an anxious wait for news.

Although calm, several residents said they were concerned their properties may have suffered smoke damage and did not expect to be allowed home on Sunday night.

Emergency services continue to monitor the situation as efforts to bring the wildfire under control remain ongoing.

A further fire has been reported this afternoon at Braichmelyn Forestry above Bethesda.
