Conwy County Borough Council has strengthened its commitment to promoting the Welsh language in the workplace after signing the TUC Cymru Twf Charter – The Welsh Language at Work Charter.

The charter was signed during a special event at the Council Chamber last night (Thursday 16 July), with the Council Leader and Chief Executive joined by representatives from TUC Cymru, Unison, GMB and Unite.

The agreement sets out a commitment to creating an inclusive bilingual workplace, supporting staff to use and develop their Welsh language skills and encouraging greater use of Cymraeg across the council workforce.

The charter is based on four key principles: Welsh language growth and rights, inclusion and linguistic justice, leadership and accountability, and continuous learning and confidence building.

Conwy Council Leader Councillor Julie Fallon said the Welsh language was central to the identity of the county.

She said: “Cymraeg is part of who we are and everything that we do. It’s our language and belongs to us all. It is part of our history, our heritage, and our culture.

“As an inclusive bilingual workplace, we want our employees to feel welcomed, valued and supported to use Welsh, whether they are fluent speakers, learners or developing their skills.”

The council says the charter will help staff understand their Welsh language rights and ensure they have opportunities to learn and use the language in their everyday work.

Dr Mandy James, TUC Cymru Bilingual Communications Officer, congratulated the council and trade unions involved in making the commitment.

She said trade unions have an important role in supporting workers’ Welsh language rights and helping create fair opportunities for people to use and learn Welsh at work.

GMB representative Alyn Thomas added that Welsh belongs to everyone and that workplaces where the language can thrive help promote equality and strengthen communities.

The signing forms part of wider efforts to support the growth of Welsh language use across workplaces and public services in Wales.
