Community: Support grows for Llandudno Skatepark revamp

Fresh momentum is building behind plans to revamp Llandudno’s ageing skatepark, amid growing safety concerns and a fast-rising public petition.

The skatepark, operated by Conwy County Borough Council, has long been a popular spot for skateboarders, BMX riders and scooter users. However, residents and regular users say the facility has deteriorated significantly in recent years, with worn ramps and general wear and tear raising safety concerns.

Campaigner Tallulah Deakin recently launched an online petition calling for a complete overhaul of the site — and potentially the addition of a new mud pump track. The petition has already attracted more than 300 signatures within its first week, with support continuing to grow on social media.

Following numerous approaches from constituents, MS Janet Finch-Saunders has now met with Tallulah to discuss the proposals and says she is “100% supportive” of a revamp.

She said: “I had a constructive meeting with the lead campaigner Tallulah Highfield and have pledged my 100% support for the revamp of Llandudno skatepark.

Llandudno skatepark has previously been a much used amenity for young people, I would love to see that happen again with an exciting revamp that will attract young people in the area.

With £20 million funding from the scheme, and that kind of investment coming into the town, I would love to see it used on projects like this.”

While the specific funding stream has not yet been formally allocated to the skatepark project, Finch-Saunders says she will be writing to both Conwy County Borough Council and Llandudno Town Council to explore how the proposal could be progressed.

Modern skatepark redevelopments elsewhere in North Wales have shown how upgraded concrete parks and pump tracks can increase youth participation, provide safer riding environments, and reduce anti-social behaviour by giving young people a dedicated, well-designed space.

Finch-Saunders added that she is keen to ensure investment supports local residents and businesses, and is encouraging people to contact her office with suggestions on how available funding should be spent.

The campaign continues to gather support as discussions move forward over the future of one of Llandudno’s long-standing youth facilities.
