An opticians in Colwyn Bay is showing that the traditional Saturday job is far from dead, by giving young people the chance to learn new skills and kick-start their careers.

Figures show that almost one in eight of those aged 16-24 are not in education, employment or training, and the decline of the traditional Saturday job has been identified as one reason why young people aren’t ready for work.

However, the locally owned and run Specsavers Colwyn Bay store is committed to encouraging more youngsters into the world of work.

The team employs Oscar Wong, 18, who has worked weekends at the store as an optical assistant for the past year, alongside completing his final year of school and applying to study Optometry at university.

The role offers hands-on experience, helping to develop skills in customer service and retail, while providing an introduction to the wide range of further career and training opportunities available.

Oscar said: "When I first joined Specsavers, my initial aim was to gain work experience to strengthen my personal statement, as I understood how important this would be when applying to university and future jobs. However, I was fortunate enough to be offered a part-time weekend position.

"From the moment I stepped into the store, I was warmly welcomed by the entire team. The supportive and friendly atmosphere made it feel like one big family, and I quickly realised this was an environment I would enjoy being part of. Fast forward to today, I have learnt far more than I ever expected.

"Currently, I am completing my final year of school and have applied to my university choices. I am also applying for the Specsavers Bright Stars Scholarship, which offers support for aspiring optometrists. Overall, my experience with Specsavers as a student has been fantastic."

Specsavers Colwyn Bay store director, Andrew Deeley, says the store is focused on encouraging young people to explore optics as a future career. ‘A Saturday role is a great entry point, giving young people the chance to gain hands-on experience and an insight into the industry within a supportive team environment.

"These positions are about far more than earning extra income," Andrew adds.

"They help build essential skills such as teamwork, communication and customer service that will stay with you throughout your career. Many of our colleagues began in weekend roles and have since progressed into long-term, fulfilling careers with us, which is something we’re extremely proud of."

Specsavers offers a wide range of career paths, from retail and customer service to clinical roles in optics. With ongoing training and development opportunities, the stores are committed to investing in their teams and helping people progress.
