Volunteers are needed to support people diagnosed with a terminal illness during a service expansion.

The Marie Curie volunteer Helper service, which began in 2014 in Wales, sees specially trained volunteers matched with a person living with a terminal illness in order to provide support for up to three hours a week for that person and their loved ones.

The service has previously been available across Cardiff and the Vale, but is now set expand across North Wales.

The UK’s leading end of life charity provides round-the-clock expert care and support to people living with a terminal illness, and their families, at its Cardiff and the Vale Hospice and in their own homes. Its Information and Support Line provides a listening ear to anyone impacted by terminal illness and also features clinical nurse specialists who are available for any clinical support needed. Bereavement support is also offered.

The Helper role will see volunteers carry out weekly visits in a variety of settings to provide one-to-one companionship and support, by offering a listening ear or engaging in every day activities or hobbies. You could be asked to drive clients to appointments or on short trips out.

Scott Davies, Volunteer Services Coordinator, said: “Volunteers may also be asked to help with small, daily tasks like making tea or accessing the internet, which allows carers to have a short break.

“You may be supporting your client’s family or carers before or during bereavement, and we’re looking for people who are reliable and committed to regularly spending time with someone and offering support. You won’t be required to provide nursing, personal or counselling care and full training and support will be provided.”

All applicants will be subject to DBS checks and references.
