The Met Office has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for large parts of North Wales, with heavy downpours, lightning and possibly hail expected to hit some areas later today.

The warning is in place from 3pm this afternoon until midnight and covers Conwy, Denbighshire, Gwynedd and the Isle of Anglesey.

Forecasters say many areas may avoid the worst of the storms, but some parts of North Wales could see intense thunderstorms bringing torrential rain, frequent lightning, large hail and strong gusty winds this afternoon and evening.

The Met Office warned that driving conditions could quickly deteriorate due to spray, standing water and hail, potentially leading to longer journey times and disruption to bus services.

There is also a risk of delays to train services, short-term power cuts and flooding to a small number of homes and businesses.

Lightning strikes could also cause damage to some buildings and structures.

The warning follows another spell of hot weather across Wales, with the unstable conditions expected to trigger scattered thunderstorms later in the day.

The Met Office said: “While many places will miss the worst conditions, where thunderstorms do occur they bring the potential for torrential downpours of rain, frequent lightning, large hail and strong, gusty winds.”

Residents are being advised to stay updated with the latest forecasts as conditions could change quickly.

People living in areas prone to flash flooding are being urged to prepare emergency flood kits and consider flood plans, while motorists are advised to check travel conditions before setting off.

The Met Office also warned people caught outdoors during thunderstorms to seek enclosed shelter, such as inside a vehicle, and avoid standing near trees or elevated areas which could be struck by lightning.

Forecasters said the warning has been classified as “medium likelihood” with “low impact”, meaning disruption is possible in some locations but not expected to be widespread.
