The first hints of gold are beginning to stir beneath the green canopy at Bodnant Garden — a quiet signal that one of nature’s most breathtaking spectacles is on its way.
Each spring, the famous Laburnum Arch transforms from a tunnel of fresh leaves into a cascading corridor of golden blooms. Stretching for over 50 metres, the arch becomes a living chandelier, its pendulous yellow flowers hanging in dense, sunlit clusters. It’s a display that lasts only a few short weeks — fleeting, delicate, and all the more magical because of it.
Right now, the scene is still in its early stages. The arch is lush and green, with the very first buds beginning to appear after recent sunshine. To give more visitors the chance to experience the arch in full bloom, National Trust has announced extended opening hours at Bodnant. From Saturday 16 May to Sunday 7 June, the garden will open earlier and close later each day — a move designed to ease pressure during one of the busiest and most photogenic times of the year.
It’s a welcome change for what has become one of the UK’s most sought-after seasonal sights. When the laburnum is in full flower, the arch draws visitors from across the country, all hoping to walk beneath its golden canopy at just the right moment. Timing is everything — too early and you’ll miss the bloom, too late and the petals will already be falling like confetti.
Those planning a visit are being urged to book ahead, with tickets already available online. Demand is expected to be high, especially if warm weather accelerates the flowering.
