Small businesses across Wales are set to benefit from a £20 million funding boost aimed at improving access to finance for underserved communities.

Community lender BCRS Business Loans has secured the funding from the British Business Bank as part of its Community ENABLE Funding programme.

The investment will support small and medium-sized enterprises across Wales and the West Midlands, particularly those in disadvantaged areas or from underrepresented groups who often struggle to secure funding through traditional lenders.

BCRS Business Loans, which has been operating since 2002, will use the funding to provide loans ranging from £25,001 to £250,000. It becomes the sixth lender to be accredited under the programme and the first with a dedicated focus on Wales.

The organisation, which operates as a not-for-profit community development finance institution, has already lent more than £100 million to businesses since its launch, generating an estimated £518 million in economic impact.

Chief Executive Stephen Deakin said the funding would strengthen support for businesses that are often overlooked.

“As a community development finance institution, we are pleased to build on our longstanding partnership with the British Business Bank,” he said. “This accreditation strengthens our ability to support businesses in Wales and the West Midlands, giving them vital access to finance to grow and create jobs.”

He added that more than a third of the organisation’s lending in its most recent financial year was directed towards the UK’s most disadvantaged areas.

The funding forms part of a wider initiative by the British Business Bank to increase access to finance for smaller businesses across the UK. Following the latest allocation, more than £100 million has now been committed to community development finance institutions through the programme.

Reinald de Monchy, Chief Banking Officer at the British Business Bank, said the move would help drive growth in local economies.

“Its commitment to supporting small businesses across Wales and the West Midlands aligns with our mission to widen access to finance across the UK’s nations and regions,” he said. “Through collaboration, we can help more entrepreneurs invest, grow and create jobs in the communities they serve.”

The Community ENABLE Funding programme is designed to strengthen the community finance sector by increasing the availability of funding to smaller lenders, enabling them to support more businesses on the ground.

For many small firms in Wales, particularly those unable to access mainstream finance, the latest funding is expected to provide a significant lifeline — helping businesses to start, scale and continue contributing to their local economies.
