A young sailor has been developing her skills and overall experience as part of a regional squad.

Sophie Morris, a Year 4 pupil at Rydal Penrhos, was selected to the Royal Yachting Association’s North Wales Regional Optimist squad, and she has been taking part in a series of out-of-season training sessions to further hone her skills ahead of a busy series of competitions in the coming months.

The Welsh National & Regional Squad Programme supports around 140 talented sailors from Wales and is a proven pathway for young sailors to follow into GBR, Olympic and Olympic Development Squads.

In addition to her efforts with the squad, Sophie has also been learning a great deal off brother and Year 8 pupil Llion, who is currently part of the RYA Cymru Wales National Topper squad.

It has been an enormously encouraging start to life on the water for the pupil, who has developed her skills considerably as part of Rydal Penrhos’ thriving sailing programme led by programme leader and international competitor Max Todd.

Prep School Head Alison Hind, said: “Sophie’s progression from a sailing perspective is something she can be incredibly proud of, and she looks to have acquired the same passion for the sport as her brother and has made a strong starting following in his footsteps.

“Being part of the regional squad during the summer will undoubtedly aid her overall development considerably, and this will be further enhanced with our sailing provision in the weeks and months ahead.”
