Rydal Penrhos, a co-educational independent school in Colwyn Bay, has earned award recognition as it strengthens its relationship with the Armed Forces community.

The school, which educates pupils aged two to eighteen, has recently been awarded Bronze status in both the Armed Forces Friendly Schools Cymru initiative and the Armed Forces Employer Recognition Scheme.

These prestigious accolades, bestowed by Supporting Service Children in Education (SSCE) Cymru, highlight Rydal Penrhos' commitment to supporting service personnel and their families, whether as pupils, parents, or staff of the school.

The awards follow soon after Principal Tom Hutchinson signed the Armed Forces Covenant, pledging the school to provide fair and equal provision to individuals with service backgrounds.

Rydal Penrhos has publicly stated its aim to further support and celebrate service families. As the largest historic independent school in North Wales, service families from across the region form a significant proportion of the school's overall enrolment. Rydal Penrhos also has a strong Combined Cadet Force (CCF) presence, and holds the unique distinction of being the only CCF sponsored by the 1st Queen's Dragoon Guards.

The school has implemented a range of specific measures to support service families and engage with the armed forces community. This includes a dedicated point of contact, specialist transition support, and a tailored approach within the school's outstanding pastoral care framework.

Aside from these specific measures, service children at Rydal Penrhos also benefit from the same outstanding facilities, resources and opportunities as their classmates. This includes exceptional teaching and academic support, which saw Rydal Penrhos buck the negative national trend in GCSE and A-Level results last summer.

Principal Mr Tom Hutchinson said: "We are proud to reach these important milestones. Rydal Penrhos is dedicated to providing a welcoming and supportive environment for service personnel and their families. As these brave individuals make sacrifices for the safety and security of our country, they can trust in Rydal Penrhos to provide world class care and education for their children."
