A local politician has welcomed news that a solution to open a railway pedestrian crossing in Deganwy could be on the cards.

The Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has welcomed the announcement by Network Rail that a working group is to be established to explore all practicable options after the crossing over the railway in Deganwy closed in 2011.

There is a clear commitment to involve the local community.

Commenting on Network Rail’s decision to set up the working group, Mrs. Finch-Saunders said: “The closure of the Pentywyn crossing by stealth in the early hours of the morning and without any notice or consultation of residents in 2011, continues to be a major concern.

“For over a decade I have been pleased to work with residents and elected representatives. We have seen Planning Inspectorate Wales take the decision that there remains a public right of way at the railway crossing at Warren Drive/Glan y Mor Road, and the Special General Licensing Committee, Conwy County Borough Council, vote to quash an application by Network Rail to close footpath.

“As I have said before, it is reasonably practicable to make the crossing safe.

“According to the Tywyn Footpath Level Crossing Impact Assessment Report from Network Rail, closure by diversion to a stepped footbridge could eliminate all risk.

“I am grateful to Network Rail for making an admiral decision to establish a working group to explore practical options to address safety concerns”.
