A man remains in police custody after a stolen taxi was involved in a series of incidents in Holyhead before being stopped while travelling in the wrong direction on the A55.
North Wales Police received a report at around 7.30pm on Monday, August 24, that a taxi had been stolen in Holyhead.
Shortly afterwards, the vehicle was involved in a collision with a cyclist on London Road. A number of parked vehicles were also damaged.
The cyclist remains in hospital receiving treatment for injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.
The taxi then entered the westbound carriageway of the A55 at Holyhead, travelling against the direction of traffic.
Officers closed the road and, at around 7.55pm, safely brought the vehicle to a stop between Rhosneigr and Rhostrehewfa.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of several offences, including theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving and failing to provide.
He remains in custody while officers continue to question him.
Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Nick Evans said the investigation into the incidents in Holyhead and on the A55 was continuing.
He appealed to anyone who witnessed what happened, or who may have dashcam, CCTV or mobile phone footage, to contact North Wales Police.
He said: “I am very grateful for the support we have received from the public so far and for the positive comments that have been made regarding the actions of our officers, who brought this incident to a safe conclusion.”
T/ACC Evans also acknowledged the seriousness of the incident, particularly following the recent tragic events in Cleveland.
He said: “It is clear to all of us, particularly in light of the tragic events in Cleveland, just how serious the potential consequences of this incident were.
“I am extremely proud of the courage and professionalism shown by our officers in resolving a highly challenging situation safely.”
He urged people not to speculate about the circumstances or any possible motivation while the investigation remains ongoing.
