Local MS reprimanded by Senedd over misuse of resources

A senior Conservative politician has been formally reprimanded by the Senedd after an investigation found she misused publicly funded resources for party political work.

Members agreed, without objection, to censure Janet Finch-Saunders, the MS for Aberconwy, following a report by the Senedd’s Standards Commissioner.

The investigation, led by Douglas Bain, concluded that Finch-Saunders had “repeatedly caused or permitted” a member of staff to carry out party political duties during normal working hours in her constituency office — a breach of strict rules governing the use of taxpayer-funded resources.

Senedd rules clearly state that public money, including staff time, office facilities and materials, must not be used for party political purposes. These standards are designed to maintain trust and ensure a clear separation between official duties and political campaigning.

While Finch-Saunders denied any wrongdoing throughout the investigation, she did not oppose the sanction when it was brought before members.

The Senedd’s Standards Committee said she had “failed to demonstrate the leadership expected” of a Member, highlighting the importance of accountability and adherence to the rules.

The case comes at a significant time politically, with Finch-Saunders — first elected in 2011 — selected as the Conservative lead candidate for the new Bangor Conwy Môn constituency ahead of the next Senedd election.

Issues around standards in public office have been under increasing scrutiny across the UK in recent years, with both devolved governments and UK Parliament strengthening rules and oversight to maintain public confidence.

For voters in North Wales, the decision serves as a reminder of the expectations placed on elected representatives — and the systems in place to hold them to account when those standards are not met.
