Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has called on the Welsh Government to review restrictions around singing in churches ahead of the Christmas period.

Speaking following the publication of new guidance on safe singing by the UK Government Darren said:

“The Christmas season will soon be here and many people enjoy going to carol services and participating in worship services at this particular time of the year.

“The UK Government has recently issued guidance on principles for safer singing which will enable people to get together and sing safely and I’d encourage the Welsh Government to consider its position to see whether restrictions can be relaxed in Wales.”

Responding to Darren Millar, Finance Minister Rebecca Evans MS said that she would refer the matter to Ministeral colleagues.

Speaking outside of the chamber Mr. Millar added: “I am pleased that the Welsh Government will be considering my request. It is important to review restrictions regularly to allow people to worship freely, especially as we approach important festivals like Christmas.

“Singing is an integral part of Christian worship and many other faiths, if it can be reintroduced in a safe way it should be.”
