Welsh Ministers urged to add lifesaving to new curriculum

July 08, 2019 - 1187 views

The new Welsh school curriculum will be implemented from 2022. This curriculum will be flexible and will allow teachers to teach children in the ways that work best for them.

The British Heart Foundation and other groups in Wales are anxious that schools don't miss the opportunity to inlcude life saving skills in the classroom and say it might be the only opportunity that children will get to learn this life saving skill.

In countries such as Norway where CPR is already more widely taught in schools, survival rates as high as 1 in 4 have been reported.

Evidence from places such as Denmark and Seattle in the United States show that adopting best practice in emergency response and legislating for training in schools can significantly improve survival rates.

In the UK, less than 1 in 10 people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and nearly a third of UK adults surveyed told us that they wouldn't intervene if they saw someone who needed help because they wouldn't be confident.

In Scotland all 32 local councils across Scotland have committed to teaching CPR in schools, and all children in England will be taught CPR and life-saving skills from 2020.

If you believe that there are merits to these essential skills being added to the curriculum enter your details into this simple form to send a letter to your AM.

Tell them you believe CPR and life-saving skills need to be a part of our new curriculum and Wales shouldn't miss out on this opportunity.
