Once again Colwyn Bay plays host to another high profile sporting event when the World Shore Angling Championships comes into North Wales next month.
It will be the first time North Wales has been chosen for the event with locations including Abergele and Pensarn, Llanfairfechan, Penmaenmawr and Llandudno. It will be the 35th World Championship for Men and the 26th World Championship for Ladies.
Conwy County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy, Councillor Louise Emery said “By supporting this event the World Championships are coming to Wales for the first time, and highlighting Conwy County is the right environment for great events”.
"22 countries have registered to compete on our shorelines for the week long championship, and many nations will arrive up to a week before to recce the area. This is great news for our local economy as we’re expecting over a hundred and fifty competitors to be staying in the area for up to two weeks”.
The North Wales Coastline rivals some of the world’s top fishing destinations and it is hoped the World Championships being hosted here will inspire those involved to potentially host further events.
Wales Ladies Team Captain, Helen Pearce said “Bidding for the event was very nerve wracking, but we were confident in our fishing offer and with the support of Conwy County Borough Council’s Event Team we’re really looking forward to welcoming the world to our home. Both the Ladies and Men’s Welsh teams are strong and we’re hoping we’ll be keeping some of the medals in Wales!”.
