A local housing association has applied to Conwy County Borough Council for permission to build up to 31 apartments for rent on the site of the Eldelweiss Hotel in Lawson Road, Colwyn Bay.

The plans submitted by St. Asaph based Pennaf has been drawn up by John Mc Call Architects and will see the entire demolition of the two storey Victorian building and it's iconic turret.

It is hoped that the new apartments will be made affordable and available to local people.

In the document seen by Bayside Radio, the developers have said that the proposed development 'will not simply blend with the existing housing stock. The new apartment block should be recognisably distinct but simultaneously strengthen the local identity'.

The document goes on to say that 'the entrance has been designed to create an attractive sense of place and a strong design identity has been established through the simple yet rich use of materials, colours and textures'.

The proposed building will be 3 storeys in height with a single 2 story wing off the main block, with traditional pitched roof. This will be in keeping with the surrounding properties along Lawson Road.

Conwy Borough Council will be considering the application shortly.
