A new 4G all-weather pitch was officially opened late last week after months of development at Parc Eirias.

Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport visited Colwyn Bay to officially launch the exciting new sport facility in the town.

Lord Elis-Thomas, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport said: “The pitch is a very welcome addition to the wealth of top class indoor and outdoor sports and leisure facilities in North Wales and will no doubt contribute to the growth of sport in the region. Good quality, modern facilities play a huge part in encouraging more people to get active and it’s an honour to be here at beautiful Eirias.”

The full-sized pitch will be used for both football and rugby by local community clubs and schools, ensuring games can be played in all weather conditions, and will also provide a training resource for North Wales regional teams.  It will also help ease demands on the main arena pitch within Stadiwm Zip World.

Cllr Louise Emery of Conwy Borough Council said, “This superb new pitch complements and enhances the existing facilities in Parc Eirias - a high quality resource that will encourage, and enable, greater participation in physical activity.”

During design and planning particular attention was paid to environmental impact; bat boxes were installed, and twenty-four trees will be planted to replace, and add to, trees removed during construction.

Cllr Emery added, “As part of our on-going work in Eirias, we’re working with Friends of Eirias Park to ensure the wider park is a great environment and green space for all Conwy residents and visitors to enjoy.”

The 4G pitch has been funded via Welsh Government Sports Facilities Capital Loan Scheme; All Wales Sports Collaboration Fund; WRU Facilities Grant; Welsh Government Vibrant and Viable Places; and Conwy County Borough Council.
