Local student's spring sale success

Independent Living Skills (ILS) students from Coleg Llandrillo recently organised a 'Spring Bulbs' charity sale at the college's Rhos-on-Sea campus, where green-fingered staff and students alike were able to pick up a bargain.

Ten 'Life and Work Skills' students - who have mild to moderate learning disabilities, severe learning disabilities and social and emotional behavioural difficulties - spent weeks preparing for the event: from the initial planting in their own college greenhouse, through potting-up the bulbs, to selling them to staff and students.

They raised just under £100 in a two-hour break from their studies.

The proceeds will go to the mental health charity, Mind. The charity offers information and advice to people with mental health problems and lobbies government and local authorities on their behalf.

The students sold a range of spring bulbs in hand-painted, decorated pots, which included tulips, alliums and brodeas. They also sold a selection of pompom chicks which they had created in the classroom, to add to the fundraising.

Their tutor Tracey Hockin said:

The students arranged the sales event as part of their leadership qualification. They worked really hard as a team and especially loved looking after the bulbs throughout the growing process.
